The this week’s Photo Challenge by Lens and Pens, I selected this series of photos,
which are stills from a video taken with an iPod Touch5 while driving
on the new addition for the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge.

The original bridge, now the western span, was
designed by Charles H. Purcelland and built by the American Bridge Company.
It opened for traffic on November 12, 1936, six months before the Golden Gate Bridge.
The new East span was designed by Donald MacDonald and opened
ahead of schedule on September 2, 2013.
The double balanced cantilever bridge, five truss bridges,
and two truss causeways (seen on the left) connects
Yerba Buena Island to Oakland will be demolished.
In this still you can see the video clip above the photo.

This was my second crossing of the Bay Bridge in 18 years, of which both happened in 2013.
The first on the western span and the second on the new eastern span.

Thanks for stopping by!
