The this week’s Photo Challenge by Lens and Pens, I selected this series of photos,
which are stills from a video taken with an iPod Touch5 while driving
on the new addition for the San Francisco – Oakland Bay Bridge.

The original bridge, now the western span, was
designed by Charles H. Purcelland and built by the American Bridge Company.
It opened for traffic on November 12, 1936, six months before the Golden Gate Bridge.
The new East span was designed by Donald MacDonald and opened
ahead of schedule on September 2, 2013.
The double balanced cantilever bridge, five truss bridges,
and two truss causeways (seen on the left) connects
Yerba Buena Island to Oakland will be demolished.
In this still you can see the video clip above the photo.

This was my second crossing of the Bay Bridge in 18 years, of which both happened in 2013.
The first on the western span and the second on the new eastern span.

Thanks for stopping by!
I just loved the video and music Basiga and the different angles you took of the bridge. Great shots. I love bridges. ๐

Fantastic shots! As I drove in to the City yesterday I so wanted to take some photos of the bridges…but I was driving ๐
So you must be a local too?! I was fortune in both rides, to be the passenger. Send me a message when you get to finally shoot those shots. Would LOVE to see them.
Live in Tracy, and go in to SF as often as I can. Usually on BART though.
I remember when BART opened. I thought to myself back then, I want to ride it. But never did and never have. Now I’m in the Santa Cruz Mountains and have do desire at all. Well, when that day comes that you cross that bridge, snap snap snap. I actually thought, I will do a video and capture stills from it. It was challenging getting the right moment from the still, but it turned out better than I imagined. Have a great week!
My favorite is the second one with its combination of shapes and angles with the sun creating a focal point of light.

I’m a true devotee to bridges; they are such fabulous human inventions. I especially like your last image that captures the intersection of architecture over land and water. Well done. Happy Phoneography Challenge.
